Udo Uibo

Udo Uibo (born May 5, 1956 in Viljandi ) is an Estonian literary critic , translator and linguist .

Life

Udo Uibo went to school in Viljandi from 1963 to 1974 and then studied at the University of Tartu , where he graduated in 1979 with a degree in Estonian Philology. He then spent two years as a researcher at the Institute for Language and Literature of the Estonian Academy of Sciences in Tallinn . From 1981 to 1990 he was the linguistic editor of the magazine Keel ja Kirjandus , after which he moved to the editorial office of the literary magazine Looming . From 1997 to 2005 he was editor-in-chief of this renowned magazine. Since then he has lived in Tallinn as a freelance scientist and translator.

Udo Uibo was a member of the literary group Wellesto and has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1989 .

Uibo made his debut poetry in 1974 in Noorus magazine , using the pseudonym Kalju Soa . Even later he occasionally published poems under this pseudonym, but also under his own name, but never published an independent volume of poetry.

Soon thereafter, Uibo concentrated on linguistic, editorial and literary critical work. He is also active as a translator, primarily from English. The authors he has translated include Anthony Burgess , Truman Capote , Toni Morrison , George Orwell , Isaac Bashevis Singer , John Steinbeck and Evelyn Waugh .

Awards

Uibo is the bearer of the Order of the White Star (Class V).
