The wrinkled knot ant ( Myrmica rugulosa ) is an ant from the subfamily of knot ants (Myrmicinae).

features

In workers, the scapus of the antennae is sharply bent and slightly angled at the base. The head is significantly longer than it is wide. The petiolus is elongated and evenly rounded at the top. It's smooth but not shiny. The rest of the body shows only a weak microsculpture. The males have antennae with a very short scapus that is not bent at the base.

distribution and habitat

This warmth-loving ant is common in all of Central Europe in the flatlands and in the hill country, but is rare in places. It uses well-sunlit locations with short-growing vegetation. Compared to other Myrmica species, it is very warmth-loving. Areas with patchy vegetation are also used, such as sand, open bank areas and roadsides.

Way of life

The sex animals swarm in the late afternoon between early July and mid-October, usually in August. It often happens that some sex animals mate immediately after leaving the nest without flying off. The colonies are predominantly polygyn , sometimes a colony can be spread over several nests and consist of several thousand workers. The species can also live in territories of the black garden ant ( Lasius niger ), as it has special anti-aggressive behaviors that make peaceful coexistence possible. The wrinkled knot ant can stand out as a collector of dead insects on roadsides and gutters.
