Gervasius (Nitra)

Gervase (Slovak Gervaz ; † after 1105 / 1111 ) was the first Bishop of nitrate after a long interruption.

history

prehistory

880 the first Bishop Wiching was installed for Nitra. Thereafter, no further names of bishops have come down to us; the diocese ceased to exist at the latest with the end of the Moravian Empire around 914. The area was incorporated into the Hungarian Archdiocese of Gran (Esztergom) since 1000. The fact that Bishop Bystrík is said to have resided in Nitra around 1045 is an indication of the 16th century and is very uncertain. Around 1100 Nitra was a provost of the Archdiocese of Gran. Around 1105 King Koloman of Hungary fought successful battles for the principality of Nitra against Prince Almoš of Croatia.

Gervasius

Gervasius was only mentioned as a witness in an undated document for the Pannonhalma Abbey . According to the other witnesses, this should have been issued between 1105 and 1111. The new Archbishop Laurentius von Gran created a new diocese organization for Hungary at the Synod in Gran around 1106/07. The diocese of Nitra was probably re-established around this time.
