Gervasius of Canterbury

Gervasius of Canterbury (* around 1145, † around 1210, also Gervase of Canterbury, Gervasus Cantuariensis or Gervasius Dorobernensis) was an English chronicler and Benedictine monk .

biography

Gervasius spent much of his life at Canterbury Cathedral . Little is known about his early life. During his time as a monk, he wrote a number of chronicles, maps and original reports that represent important original sources of the time.

His best-known work is the Chronica , a chronicle that covers the period from 1100 to 1199. His report on an astronomical event in 1178 is the basis for the hypothesis that the formation of the lunar crater Giordano Bruno was observed at that time.

He also wrote the Actus Pontificum Cantuariensis Ecclesiae , a history of the Archbishops of Canterbury until the death of Hubert Walter in 1205, and an early Mappa Mundi .
