The Altmarkt 10 commercial building is a landmark building on the south side of Dresden's Altmarkt , which was completed in 2000. A special feature of the postmodern building is the stepped shape of the tiled roof, which is why the building is popularly referred to as a Lego house.

description

The building complex was built in 1999/2000 by Meinhard von Gerkan , Volkwin Marg and Partner and has a curtain wall made of thin sandstone slabs. Decorative, profiled thin rods are located above and below the windows and shape the facade through the play of light and shadow. The height and type of the building is based on the Altmarkt building built by Herbert Schneider and Johannes Rascher , the building of the former “Centrum” department store and the former Café Prague on the other side of Seestrasse . In an abstract form, the building takes up typical elements of the traditional Dresden town hall, which are laid down as specifications in a communal design statute. These include the “tall window formats”, the “typical brick red roof”, the dormer windows and the “box-like bay windows”. The former small-scale structure of the building site was not taken up with the new building, originally there were four baroque town houses.

reception

“The building makes a successful attempt to combine urban planning requirements on a large scale with individual designs in detail. It does not stop at the adoption of historical building lines, but instead avows itself to an attitude: plastic incisions, arcades, gradations vary the facade. Linear inlays in the window axes create a vertical rhythm. It is precisely through the choice of these design elements that the house again refers to the surrounding buildings towards the inner courtyard, and the all-round glazing of the ground floor level creates an exciting interrelation between inside and outside. A floor glazing in the street provides a view of the exposed vaults and walls of the historic Altmarkt development. "

The building was awarded the Leon Batista Alberti Prize in 2000.

Equipment and use

The six-storey building has electronic access systems and air conditioning, windows and walls are insulated with heat and sound insulation. In addition, there is a direct connection between the individual building entrances and the underground car park (in the 1st and 2nd basement, which can also be reached by elevators) under the Altmarkt.

The building was rented to many medium-sized companies, mainly to real estate companies. The retail space on the ground floor is rented to restaurants and retail chains in the clothing industry.
