History of Swiss roller hockey 1939–1945

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The history of Swiss roller hockey begins at the beginning of the 20th century. After the first championship in Geneva in 1910 , the " Fédération suisse de hockey sur patins à Roulettes " was founded there in January 1911 . The first Swiss roller hockey club was also founded in Montreux in 1911 , making HC Montreux one of the oldest clubs in this sport in the world.

More than a decade later, in 1924, the Roller Sports Association (SRV) was founded, which was also home to roller hockey players after the Second World War . This association still exists today and organizes the figure skating and speed skating competitions. Often the start date of the Swiss championship is dated from 1932 to this year based on a press article, but there has been evidence that Swiss roller hockey championships have been running since 1910, albeit with interruptions. From 1947, the newly founded Swiss Roller Hockey Association SRHV took over the organization of the championships and cup competitions.

Outbreak of war

There was little to read in the press over the years immediately after the outbreak of war. The events of the war also shaped the press reports. In a version of the RC Zurich on the history of the club it can be read that you could only compete with a “core team” during your “active service”. But Swiss roller hockey did not come to a standstill, and the Montreux HC became Swiss champions in the first two years of the war in 1939 and 1940 . A championship was played accordingly. In 1941 a new association was founded with the RHC Lausanne . At the inaugural meeting, the then national goalkeeper M. Emile Crosa presented the sport of roller hockey to those present.

The press also reported that there was a meeting between Switzerland and Italy at the end of March 1940 . This took place in the Hallenstadion . The Swiss national team consisted of the best players from Montreux and Zurich . Italy won 7-1, they defeated the Zurich selection 8-1 the day before.

In April 1941, the Montreux HC received the French champion Lyon HC as Swiss champions for a guest appearance. The two teams played two games, with Montreux winning. Montreux also went to Lyon in December, where they won 3-2 at the Palais d'hiver . This was to be the last known international roller hockey games during the war.

1942 - The Zurich RSC champion

Even in the war years, Montreux HC was dominant in the Swiss championship, as it has been since the first SRV championship in 1924. In 1942, the Zurich RSC then won the championship. The Roller Club Zurich mentions in its history that the Zurich RSC defeated Montreux, but the scooter for its part prevented a decisive game for the championship by defeating the RSC. The Gazette de Lausanne and the Journal de Genève , on the other hand, reported that such a play-off was to be expected, since two protests were received on the last day of the game at the extraordinary assembly of delegates. It was clear that there would be a playoff in Olten , which is also mentioned in the Tribune de Lausanne . But the Tribune de Lausanne reported on October 28th that the association had interpreted the regulations in such a way that the Zurich RSC would be champions without a playoff. This is then confirmed by the newspapers Die Tat and the Tribune de Lausanne .

New clubs in Zurich

The fact that Zurich was Switzerland's roller hockey center during the war can hardly be guessed from the Palmarès of Montreux today. A large number of teams were active in Zurich during the war years. In 1942, Fortuna and Rollsport, two new Zurich clubs were added to the SRV. The following Zurich clubs were in the Swiss championship in the war years: Z urcher Roller Skate Club (Zurich RSC or Zurich RSC), Roller Club Zurich (Roller Club Zurich or Roller Zurich), Rollsport Fortuna Zurich (Fortuna or Rollsport Fortuna), RC / HC Élite Zürich (Elite or Élite Zürich) and the Rollsport-Klub Zürich (Rollsport Zürich, RSC Zürich ). In addition to these five clubs, there was also the Roll- und Eis Zürich club in Zurich at the end of the 1950s , which also operated roller hockey.

But Zurich's dominance only lasted for a short time. In 1943, Montreux HC won the Swiss championship title in the championship finals. They completed the championship round played at a tournament ahead of Geneva HC and the Zurich RSC as well as the RS Basel .

20 years of SRV and inclusion in the SLL

The Zurich RSC started the 1944 roller hockey year with a brilliant victory against Montreux. “ The revenge game ”, as the newspaper Die Tat noted on April 10, went 7-2 to the home team, with which the Zurich team returned the favor for the lost championship in 1943. Ultimately, the Montreux HC secured the title in 1944. Montreux B also took part in the final round of the best four teams.

For the 20th anniversary of the SRV, celebrations were originally planned on April 8, 1944 in Montreux. However, according to the current state of knowledge, these were not held that way. The anniversary was celebrated in Zurich. The highlight, in addition to show running and an anniversary ball, was the roller hockey game between German-speaking and French -speaking Switzerland in the town hall. At that time it was quite common for roller hockey games and art skating events as well as various high-speed races to be held at the same time. According to the journalist, the event was not as successful as planned. Only 500 to 600 people would have found their way into the hall. On Saturday afternoon, five teams competed against each other. Elite Zurich only made it to fifth place, which meant that the team did not qualify for the evening finals. After the welcome by SRV President Arnold Wehrle Roller Zurich and RS Basel for 3rd place (2: 5) and the Zurich RSC against Montreux HC for the tournament victory. The game won the Montreux HC 10: 9 (5: 7) because the Vaudois turned the game in the second half. The duel between German and French-speaking Switzerland went 9: 5 to the German-speaking Swiss. Arnold Wehrle was only appointed President of the SRV at an extraordinary meeting of delegates in 1943. At that time the entire committee was renewed and it was hoped that the new people would provide more vigor for the development of the sports. The differences of opinion and the differing views between the clubs and the board of directors became apparent as early as 1942. The Gazette de Lausanne wrote of a proposed amendment to the statutes that should not allow any club too much influence. Montreux organized a tournament at the beginning of November, which in turn had the encounters between the French-speaking and German-speaking Swiss on the program. A first game ended in a 5: 5 draw, the second encounter was won by the Romands 7: 3.

In addition to the anniversary in October, there were other highlights this year. On August 5th and 6th, a national roller hockey tournament was held on the occasion of the Jeux de Genève . The Zurich RSC won it, winning both against the Swiss champions Montreux and the final against the Geneva HC team . The Roller Club Zurich had to admit defeat in the game for third place, the loser final against Montreux. These were worth mentioning because the Genève HC had great difficulties with a roller hockey piste. The club, which first called itself Carouge HC , then Servette HC and ultimately Genève HC , did not have a suitable track and had to play all games away from home. This problem should not have been resolved in 1945, but a rink was provided for each Jeux de Genève .

The SRV also took an important step in 1944 when it was admitted to Switzerland. National association for physical exercises . Since then, roller sports and roller hockey have been part of the Swiss sports system.

New championship mode

Zurich's dominance in terms of the number of teams and clubs was particularly evident when a new mode for the Swiss championship was introduced from 1945. The 1945 edition was organized in two series. A special commission for the championship mode was commissioned to do this last year. In Serie A, Montreux HC A , Montreux HC B , Zurich Roller Skating Club , Roller Zurich and Roller Sport Fortuna played . The second division (Serie B) formed the Geneva HC , the RS Basel , Élite Zurich , Skates Zurich , Zurich skate Club B and possibly even scooter Zurich B and Skates Fortuna B .

Back to normal with the Coupe des Nations

In 1945, the Coupe des Nations , the traditional Easter tournament of the Montreux HC, also returned to the program of the roller hockey calendar. Only Swiss teams were involved in the 1945 edition. The matches between Switzerland and France, which were held on June 24 as part of the Jeux de Genève , can be described as a sporting highlight and celebration on the occasion of the end of the World War . France was represented by FC Lyon , which only had international players in the squad. Montreux was also a guest, who beat Lyon 6-2 in the final.

Shortly after the end of the world war and before the turn of the year, Laurent Cormier, a pioneer of Swiss roller hockey and roller sports, died. In 1910 he founded the American Skating Rink in Geneva, where the first roller hockey games were played.

Final round 1942

The Geneva HC gave forfait for the finals and did not appear. The Montreux HC had no slope available, which is why the home game and the away game would have taken place in Zurich. The NZZ announced, however, that the second part of the final round would take place in Montreux. Finally, it cannot be clarified whether a second round took place. But the Zurich RSC and the Montreux HC were certainly tied on points after the final round. A decision game for the title between the Zurich RSC and the Montreux HC should be played in Olten, reported the Tribune de Lausanne first. The Gazette de Lausanne and the Journal de Genève also reported on an extraordinary meeting of delegates, on the occasion of which the president was exchanged, and two protests were filed for the last match day. A playoff was also considered. Equal points after all final round matches. The Tribune de Lausanne reported at the end that the Zurich RSC (in the original text wrongly RC Zurich) had agreed to a playoff, the association had interpreted the regulations so that the Zurich RSC was champion.

Championship 1944

The 1944 season was played in a transitional mode for the 1945 season. A special group was commissioned at the delegates' meeting in January to work it out. Nine teams took part in the 1944 championship. A preliminary round of the French-speaking Swiss group (Montreux HC A and B, Genève HC) and two Zurich groups played the qualification. The group winners from Zurich and the first two from the French-speaking Swiss group were allowed to play for the title. The Zurich clubs played a final group B, the winner of this group was allowed to play against the third-placed from western Switzerland for the place in the first series in 1945. The other teams then formed the second series in 1945.
