The bed load is the study of glacial bed load . It has been scientifically pursued in Germany and neighboring countries for at least 100 years. Its most important organization is the Gesellschaft für Geschiebekunde .

One result of the boulder history is the clarification of the origin of rocks to be found in Central Europe which were transported south from the northern European inland ice of the Quaternary glaciations. Many types of rock therefore have names that are associated with host rocks in Norway , Sweden , Finland or the Eastern Baltic. Identification features are the fossils under the stones or the crystal structure of the stones themselves.
