The Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation in Frankfurt am Main eV is established in 1949 in Frankfurt club . The society is a member of the German Coordination Council of Societies for Christian-Jewish Cooperation .
history
The company was founded on February 3, 1949. The lawyer Franz Böhm , at that time rector of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , was elected chairman.
The foundation was the result of efforts by various interest groups who wanted to enable a dialogue between Jews and Christians in Germany after the horrors of the Shoah . These included personalities such as the US High Commissioner John McCloy , the Methodist Pastor Carl F. Zietlow, who was sent to Germany by the National Conference of Christians and Jews (NCCJ), and Hugo Stenzel, the then publisher of the Frankfurter Neue Presse , the latter being the latter both also took part in the founding event of the Frankfurt Society. The company's first managing director was Wolfgang Lentz, who was invited by the NCCJ to New York for training purposes.
The members of the society's early years included Max Horkheimer , Theodor Adorno and Eugen Kogon, as well as Eberhard Beckmann , the first director of the Hessian Broadcasting Corporation.
activity
The company's work primarily includes educational tasks, in particular the necessary education of the population in the context of coming to terms with the Nazi era, as well as a high level of social commitment, for example in cooperation with the Women's International Zionist Organization (WIZO). In the first few years, the company also provided very specific help with reintegrating Jews who had returned. Many of the Society's tasks were taken over in later years by newly founded Jewish organizations, thereby fulfilling one of the Society's objectives, namely to support the rebuilding of Jewish life in Germany.
