Shadowchaser (OT: Shadowchaser or Project: Shadowchaser ) is an American B - action film with science fiction elements from 1992. Directed by John Eyres . The film opened in German cinemas on July 23, 1992.

action

In the near future: The cyborg Romulus comes to life and kills several scientists from the Shadowchaser project . He becomes the leader of some terrorists and occupies a state-of-the-art hospital. The hospital is mined and the inmates are taken hostage. Romulus is after Sarah, the daughter of the President of the United States . She too is taken hostage and locked in her room. In order to stop the intelligent killing machine, Trevanian wants to wake the architect of the hospital from prison. It is only when it is too late that he realizes his mistake, he has awakened the wrong man from deep sleep: the American football player Desilva, who is now accompanying the rescue team. Already at the first elevator they walk into a trap. Desilva is the only one to survive and is now supposed to keep quiet so as not to endanger the hostages' lives. In the meantime, the crazy scientist Kinderman is on site, who absolutely wants to rescue his killer cyborg alive.

Disregarding Trevanian's warnings, Desilva frees Sarah. Together they save the hostages and send them to freedom in a secret elevator. Desilva is shot by Romulus. On the run, the cyborg grabs Sarah, but Desilva escapes. In the meantime, Romulus' plan has changed, the president is supposed to hand over the ransom for Sarah personally. Kinderman wants to outsmart the cyborg and demonstrates a mini-explosive device to paralyze the cyborg's brain, the control center. He accompanies the President upstairs, where the handover is to take place. Instead of clearing the way for the shot at Romulus, he shoots the shooter first and then the president. Together with Romulus and Sarah, he tries to escape by helicopter. Romulus is thrown down an elevator by Desilva with a spear, but is able to save himself. It is then first thrown over with acid and then set on fire. Meanwhile, the FBI has hijacked the helicopter and can shoot Kinderman. Desilva and Sarah get to the helicopter and save themselves when the entire building blows up. Romulus jumps out of one of the upper floors and explodes in midair. Sarah meets her father downstairs, Kinderman had only shot a cyborg double of the president. Desilva and the freed hostages celebrate their victory over a can of beer.

background

The film is cut for a few seconds in the German version, but no bloody scenes were cut. Apparently the underlying master tape was faulty. An uncut publication took place in German-speaking countries only on laser disc .

Shadowchaser is the prelude to a film series that is only linked by the main actor Frank Zagarino and now comprises three parts. There is also a version of the film Orion's Key circulating , which bears the title Shadowchaser 4 , but has nothing to do with the actual series and was directed by Mark Roper .

Shadowchaser 2 was staged in 1994, followed in 1995 by Shadowchaser 3 , both also directed by John Eyres.

The film was nominated for the award in the category Best Video Publication at the Saturn Awards in 1993 .

criticism

Made in 1992, the film was set to become a quick cash-in after the success of Die Hard and Terminator , the elements of which it adopted.

“Shadowchaser” is a formally endeavored, but hardly hiding the low budget, action ripper of the cheap kind. Above all, the lousy camera work gives an idea of the simple production conditions at any time. Apart from that, the fast-paced and never boring pyro- burst is always amusing - and is definitely worth a look for friends of the genre. "
