Brain Training Society

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Society for Brain Training e. V. (GfG) is an international, non-profit, society for the promotion of intellectual performance based in Ebersberg . The GfG emerged from the development of brain jogging , which began in 1981 . It was founded in Stuttgart in 1989.

Goal and tasks

The association is committed to the development and dissemination of scientific training for increasing, maintaining and restoring brain performance and the intellectual performance of people of all ages. The primary goal is to optimize mental performance. That means: using your own performance resources as much as possible without sacrificing quality of life. The aim is even to improve the quality of life as possible.

Since the beginning of its existence, the GfG has particularly promoted so-called Mental Activation Training (MAT). This is linked to the intention to move from a state of relaxation, which does not allow fast or complex mental activities, to an individually high level of mental performance. A few minutes a day of activity at this level in the limit range of personal performance seems to be the prerequisite for promoting fluid intelligence . In the event that school, work and everyday life do not make correspondingly demanding requirements, artificial exercises can be carried out, which have currently been developed under the name "Adaptive Mental Training" (AMT) in the GfG. For the subsequent rapid recovery, the GfG developed the mental relaxation training (MRT), which serves the rapid recovery and thus the avoidance of exhaustion and long-term decline in performance.

In order to promote mental performance, GfG also takes physical measures from the areas of nutrition, exercise, sleep and sensory efficiency into account in addition to psychological influencing factors, insofar as they support mental performance. Scientific studies have proven the effectiveness of such combinations of mental and physical measures. In the largest of these, which the GfG had carried out in cooperation with a health insurance company, several hundred adults between the ages of 28 and 86 were included, whose mental performance was measured over eight months. - All these developments and further developments can be found in the GfG member magazine GEISTIG FIT.

construction

Today the GfG has over 2500 members, including around 1000 trainers for MAT. After restructuring in 2010, it comprises six regional associations in Germany and four foreign associations: Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland. The board consists of the 1st chairman (currently Siegfried Lehrl ), the 2nd chairman (currently vacant) and a spokesman for the Scientific Academy (currently Lothar Blaha).

The board of directors is advised by the GfG council. It includes representatives of the various GfG institutions and people with GfG-relevant competencies.

The Scientific Academy of the GfG defines the guidelines for the current and future activities of the GfG and monitors their correct implementation. The Scientific Advisory Board is to ensure the scientific continuation and further development of teaching and the scientifically founded publication and application of procedures for intellectual performance optimization such as MAT.

The GfG-Trainer-Kolleg trains MAT trainers and, based on this training, learning and memory trainers for use in many areas, e.g. B. in companies, schools, universities, clinics, retirement homes, self-help groups, organizations for a healthy lifestyle, adult education centers, etc. See also the ideas of the “Society for Brain Training e. V. (GfG) "in the spectrum of science and in the profile of the Federal Association of Senior Citizens' Organizations e. V. (BAGSO).

Activities and achievements

The members, but also interested parties, are informed by the bimonthly magazine "GEISTIG FIT". It contains many exercises for mental training and continuously reports on the basics of perception, intelligence, concentration, creativity, thinking, learning, memory, etc. from the point of view of information psychology . However, attempts to promote them are mainly dealt with, in particular for working memory training that characterizes the GfG. In this context, psychological and physical factors influencing mental performance are presented. The magazine also contains information on relevant events. In original papers it reports on scientific success tests of measures and products that are offered with the advertising promise to promote mental fitness.

In the name of the GfG, information events, seminars and courses for practical brain training take place in many places. As the organizer, for example, the GfG held the 1st and 2nd GfG Congresses in 2010 and 2011 in the advanced training center of the Hessian Medical Association in Bad Nauheim. In March 2012, GfG was a cooperation partner of the education center in the Nuremberg education campus at the two-day public event “Fit in your head - fit in life!”. In the same year the GfG was a cooperation partner of the nationwide campaign "Warning sign forgetfulness!"

As a member of the Federal Working Group of Senior Citizens' Organizations e. V. ( BAGSO ), the GfG actively participates in German Seniors' Days, where its members help shape forums and exhibitions through exhibition stands (e.g. 9th German Seniors Day from June 8th to 9th, 2009 in Leipzig or 11th German Seniors Day from June 2nd to 9th, 2009 in Leipzig. by July 4, 2015 in Frankfurt am Main, BAGSO Documentation, pp. 241–243.)
