Society for the dissemination of popular education

The Society for the Spread of Popular Education was a German association to promote popular education . It was founded on June 14, 1871, when liberal educational associations sought to merge. He preceded the library movement . One advocated, among other things, advanced training schools.

In particular, the manufacturer Fritz Kalle from Wiesbaden , the teacher Franz Leibing from Elberfeld and Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch , member of the Progressive Party , played a major role in the founding . Leibing published the magazine Der Bildungsverein . When he died in 1875, there were 545 corporations and 4,118 natural members.

From 1891 to 1933 Johannes Tews was the managing director of the association. The chairman was temporarily Heinrich zu Schoenaich-Carolath .
