John Tews (* June 19 in 1860 Heinrichsfelde , province of Brandenburg ; † 28. June 1937 in Berlin ) was a German teacher and adult educator .

Johannes Tews was active as a managing director in the Society for the Dissemination of Popular Education in Berlin and as an educational writer. From 1890 he worked for the German Teachers' Association (DLV). He advocated continuous academic teacher training and the standard school from kindergarten to college. Tews supported the establishment of "public libraries" in all cities, which were called "bookhouses" at the end of the 19th century. From 1891 to 1933 Tews headed the "Society for the Spread of Popular Education". For Tews a "popular educator" should

"Not a scaled-down version of the university lecturer, not a half or quarter scholar and art connoisseur, but ... a teacher of the greatest external dimensions and the richest inner perfection." (See literature: Tews, 1981)

For him, the focus was already on the participants. The popular educator was responsible for him for the successful transfer of knowledge. Tews set up the “ten commandments” for the popular educator.

In 1930 Tews received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the University of Greifswald (on the initiative of Konrat Ziegler ) .

After his death, his ashes were buried in the urn cemetery at the resting place in Berlin-Wedding . In the Berlin district of Nikolassee , a street and a primary school are named after him. Many other schools also bear his name.
