The striped spur-leaf cicada ( Stenocranus minutus ) is a cicada from the family of spur-leaf leafhoppers (Delphacidae).
features
The cicadas are 5–6 mm long. They have pale brown-colored wings, usually with a dark median stripe that extends to the wing tip. The head looks very elongated when viewed from the side. There are brownish longitudinal stripes in the field of vision of the cicada.
Occurrence
The cicada species is widespread in the Palearctic (Europe, North and Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa). The species is represented in the British Isles.
Way of life
The cicadas can be found on different grasses. Their host plants include the common ball grass ( Dactylis glomerata ) and the pinnate twinkles ( Brachypodium pinnatum ), both from the sweet grass family ( Poaceae ).
The cicadas fly most of the year.
An endoparasite of the Striped Spurred Cicada is Cephalops pannonicus (syn. C. curtifrons ) from the family of the eye flies .
The striped leaf hoppers have been identified as a potential carrier of a bacterial strain ( Candidatus phytoplasma ) that causes disease in cucumbers .
