The striped pine dwarf ladybug ( Scymnus suturalis ) is a beetle from the ladybird family , tribe Scymnini . The species is assigned to the subgenus Pullus within the genus Scymnus .
features
The smallest ladybirds belong to the Scymnini tribe. The striped pine dwarf ladybug reaches a length of only 1.8–2.5 millimeters. Its body is elongated oval and coarsely hairy. It has a black base color. The elytra are light reddish brown in color and have a more or less distinct basal spot that extends backwards from the scutellum along the suture of the wing cover. In addition, the wing covers have a clearly recognizable shoulder bulge.
Occurrence
The species is native and widespread in the Palearctic . They occur in northern Europe as far as the Russian island of Novaya Zemlya and in the south as far as North Africa. At the beginning of the 20th century, Scymnus suturalis was first detected in eastern North America. In 1961, a German beetle population was introduced to Michigan to control the plant louse Adelges tsuga , a pest of the hemlock .
Way of life
The adult beetles can usually be seen between April and October. One finds the bugs at various conifers, especially pines ( Pinus ). They prefer young plants and trees at the edge of the forest or in clearings. The beetles feed on aphids of the Adelgidae family and on Chionaspis salicis , a representative of the cap scale insects .
