Frenzy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Das Tüm is a fantasy creature invented by the author Dietlind Neven-du Mont in the early 1970s.

In two very successful children's books she characterized the mess as friendly, lovable, interesting and funny as well as useful and not frightening for children. It stands in deliberate contrast to the monsters that also appear in the books - in Neven-du Mont's books the difference between monsters and humans is pointed out for conceptual explanation.

The term Getüm then established itself as an independent word in common usage and is used today for new creations that are similar to the "Getüm" by Neven-du Mont, as well as for different objects whose size or shape seems remarkable.

etymology

Etymologically, the word “Getüm” can be derived from “thum” or “gethüm” in the meaning of “essence” or “Gewese”. The word “monster” would accordingly be interpreted as a nuisance . In Goethe's Faust (1806) there are the derivatives "Dreigethüm" and "Windgethüm". “Gethüm” could also be a new formation to “Ungethüm”. According to Grimm's German dictionary, the derivation is not clear. In the lines of a poem by Christian Morgenstern (1871–1914): “On the dead boom / my ignorance”, the word “boom” can be interpreted to mean something or something.

Fury in literature

The Getüm from the two children's books Das Getüm and Ein Getüm rarely comes from Dietlind Neven-du Mont was well known in the 1970s and 1980s. At Neven-du Mont, fuss is small, green, and naughty; they like to set themselves up on bookshelves and their actions seem haphazard, but are ultimately successful. Foolish collect useless objects and carry them around in kindergarten bags. Unlike the monsters, they usually cannot spit fire. However, if something is very upset, then, if you look very closely, you can sometimes see small sparks. The only known fuss lives together with some monsters and the narrator of the children's books in Via Scalabrini in Rome .

The turmoil leads through stories in the books, similar to the colorful bear, Käpt'n Blaubär, invented by Walter Moers . In its nature, the commotion resembles the Sams invented by Paul Maar . The fifth edition of the book Das Getüm was published for the last time in 1980 and is largely forgotten today, especially by younger people.

Seven years after the publication of the children's book by Dietlind Neven-du Mont, Erich Fried wrote his volume of poems, The colorful tones, in 1977, and is poetically linked to the green tussles of Neven-du Mont. The volume of poems, The Colorful Getumes , was reissued in 2002, 25 years after it was first published.

Fooling around today

As a result of these books, the term “getüm” appears today in a wide range of meanings. The term is used for fantasy beings and objects that appear fantastically unreal and either appear friendly or useful, often large and not scary. The term appears in two different basic meanings. On the one hand, imaginary creatures made up in art and in children's projects, which in their lovable unconventional nature are reminiscent of the "tumult" of Neven-du Mont, are called "tumult". On the other hand, the term “mess” is also used in common parlance to designate objects that seem fantastic, without any recognizable reference to the fantasy being Neven-du Monts.

Art and children

The artist Ilka Deutesfeld calls her exhibition in 2003 in the Marschtorzwinger Buxtehude: "Tümen und Gebilden"; Lisa and Werner Röper call their art book, published in 2006 by the Kunsthochschule Kassel, “Getume”. Lisa Röper's book for children and adults, "Getume", contains art images of characters and poems. In 1992, the artist Ottfried Narewski invented tantrums from fractals from chaos theory. The graphic artist Katharina Neeb calls the characters in her cartoons "tussles". Your Getüme remember in appearance to the Moomin by Tove Jansson .
The term “Getüm” also appears in educational projects for children, such as the Munich school project “Das Berner-Getüm” from 2003 or the sculpture competition for children in Cologne, “Dragons and Getumes” from 2003.

Common usage

Today - similar to the term "monster" - objects that appear fantastic in some way or real objects that appear unreal to the usual perception are also called "monsters". Often they are large machines in the broadest sense, for example windmills, ships, buildings such as water towers, cars, motorcycles or, as in this example for an airplane: “Its shape, the tail units at the rear and the white-blue paint make the 75-meter-long structure look like like a killer whale. ”But there are also“ Possierliche fuss - amoebas, ciliate animals and a paramecium made of pearl sack ”, whereby pearl sack animals are again more closely associated with the din of Neven-du Mont. In contrast to the purely positive figure of the turmoil in children's books, the word is also used negatively: "How cold does the pizza or CD stand appear in the first place - mostly a turmoil made of sheet metal, plastic or other industrial waste".
