The motorcycles of the ES series rolled off the assembly line at VEB Motorradwerke Zschopau between 1956 and 1978.

The acronym ES stands for " E inzylinder" and " S chwinge"; the model was available in the displacement classes 125 cm³, 150 cm³, 175 cm³, 250 cm³ and 300 cm³. It is the first MZ model that was manufactured in a series and thus the direct predecessor of all MZ series that were manufactured in the GDR . With the start of series production of the ES in 1956, the IFA combine was also renamed MZ . The MZ swing symbol also only appeared with the ES. In keeping with their name, all machines in the ES series have a full swing chassis , which was state-of-the-art at the time and which is famous for its driving characteristics , and the large models (from 250 cm³) are suitable for sidecars. The MZ ES models were popular not least because of the powerful engine that made driving comfortable and economical. In the course of the construction period there was also a lively model update, which resulted in some technical and visual changes. The abbreviation ES leads to two names in the vernacular: "Eisensau" and "Eisenschwein", but also "Esse".
