MZ Baghira and Mastiff are motorcycles with single-cylinder engines that were manufactured by MZ Motorrad- und Zweiradwerk GmbH in Zschopau from 1997 . While the production of the Baghira continued until 2008, that of the Mastiff was discontinued earlier. The motorcycles were built in kit construction. The plastic-coated frame is an in-house development, many other parts come from the construction kits of the supplier industry. The fairing parts were made by Acerbis, the central spring strut comes from White Power , the Ø 45 mm fork from Marzocchi and the engine from Yamaha . In addition to KTM, MuZ was the only manufacturer in the late 1990s to offer a Super Moto variant ex works. In terms of engine and driving performance, the MuZ was on a par with the KTM.

The history of Baghira begins in 1996. With the takeover of MZ by the Hong Leong Group from Malaysia, fresh capital was made available for the development of a new motorcycle. Building on the experience with the MZ-Skorpion models, an enduro with good off-road capabilities and a striking appearance should be developed. The design is by Masanori Hiraide, a former Yamaha employee, and Oliver Neuland. In the spring of 1997, Baghira and Mastiff were presented to the press.

The model range of Baghira included Enduro versions and various Supermoto (called Baghira Street Moto) variants. In addition, the Baghira Enduro and the Baghira Streetmoto were also offered as a height-reduced HR variant. As special models there were z. For example, the supermoto "Baghira Black Panther", which is painted completely in black, and the Enduro Baghira Forest in matt green and black, which arose from an application by MZ to supply the armed forces. The name "Baghira" refers to the German translation of the panther Bagheera from Rudyard Kipling's jungle book .

Technical specifications

drive

The four-stroke engine comes from the Yamaha XTZ 660 Ténéré . The water-cooled single-cylinder engine produced from 660 cc a nominal power of 37 kW (50 hp) and a maximum torque of 57 Nm at a speed of 5250 min -1 . The cylinder has a bore of 100 mm diameter, the piston a stroke of 84 mm with a compression ratio of 9.2: 1. The cylinder head has a chain drive overhead camshaft which controls three intake and two exhaust valves via rocker arms . The gearbox has five gears, the power is separated by a mechanically operated multi-plate oil bath clutch. The secondary drive is implemented via an O-ring chain .

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 160 km / h.

Mastiff

The Mastiff, which was launched as a fun bike at the same time as the Baghira , is largely identical. The differences are the front fenders (Mastiff: short, directly on the bike, fork stabilizer ) as well as the cockpit and headlights. In addition, the Mastiff has a shorter rear swing arm, a not fully adjustable, shorter fork and a lower seat height. It therefore corresponds exactly to the chassis of the Baghira HR SM, i.e. the height-reduced Baghira Streetmoto.

Paris Dakar Rally

In 1998, MZ started the Paris Dakar Rally on the initiative of the French importer . Two out of four started machines reached the finish and finished 36th and 53rd in the motorcycle rankings. These were only modified series motorcycles (engine protection, larger tank capacity, etc.).

Reviews

“Enduro riders appreciated the super-elegant Marzocchi fork and the high-quality White Power shock absorber as well as the decent overall quality of the motorcycle from the start. The bizarre but little noticed Funbike Mastiff (1997 to 2005), on the other hand, was a bit ahead of its time, flopped and also got strong competition from its own company in the form of Street Moto. The enduresque asphalt burners are still a lot of fun despite the somewhat tough and slack engine (at least 50 HP) for today's conditions and offer themselves as reliable second-hand bargains. "

- Thorsten Dentges : motorcycle

“The difficult balancing act between straight-line stability and handiness was solved almost perfectly. The multiple adjustable damping elements leave nothing to be desired, even in the field. Here the Baghira is just a little troubling its weight. On the road, however, the curves cannot be tight enough and the worse the surface, the more the chassis qualities come into their own. The seat position pulled far forward gives you an excellent feeling for the machine and you find yourself pushing the limits of tire grip. "
