Gevrey-Chambertin is in a wine-growing region belonging to the Côte de Nuits in the municipality of Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy (Côte de Nuits).

The appellation Gevrey-Chambertin ( Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée since September 11, 1936) has eight Grands Crus with their own appellations and 26 Premier Cru - layers . Both cultivation areas are about the same size and amount to almost half of the total cultivation area. Appellation wines without an additional quality level are grown on the other half . Only vines of the Pinot Noir variety are produced . The yield of red wine for the normal local appellation is limited to 40 hectoliters / hectare. Exceptions allow the yield to be increased by max. 20% higher. The average harvest is around 17282 hl / year, which is harvested on an area of 409 hectares.

The minimum alcohol content is 10.5 ° for the red wine. In the case of artificial enrichment with dry sugar ( chaptalization ), a maximum alcohol content is set, which is 14 ° for red wine. The minimum alcohol content for the Premiers-Crus-Lagen is 11 °.

stylistics

Gevrey Chambertin wines are color-accentuated and correspond to the classic Burgundy style with intense aromas and typical black currant flavor, enriched with cherry, musk and liquorice. Gevrey Chambertin wines go well with spicy foods such as grilled red meat, sheep, bœuf bourguignon , rabbit with onions, coq au vin , coq au chambertin, and strong cheeses, including époisses . Gevrey-Chambertin are considered to be very complex, and sometimes very powerful. The wines classified as local appellation can also be medium to moderate.
