As vault beginner , ribs together beginners or ribs beginners in which is architecture that region referred to, which at a rib arch- the transition between the wall and the free space spanning arch structure is formed.

The vault beginner is the first stone leading to the curvature above the transom of a vault, in which the individual rib profiles are collected. With a barrel vault without ribs this corresponds to the beginner's arch .

Normally, during construction, the surrounding walls are first pulled up to the eaves and the roof structure is put on. Only then are the vaults "suspended" over falsework or self-supporting. Due to a longer period of time between moving the vault beginner and the closure of the vault, there may be a change in profile due to the style of the times and a change in material between the stone carving of the vault beginner and the lighter vault construction with ribs made of fired clay.
