Thread cutting nut

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A thread cutting nut , also called a self-tapping nut or repair nut , is used to recut a defective, i.e. H. twisted, broken or corroded thread of a threaded bolt or screw .

It looks similar to a normal screw nut , but is made of hardened steel and has a cutting thread .

The use of a thread cutting nut saves you having to re-cut the thread with a thread cutting tool . All that is needed is an ordinary wrench , ring spanner , socket wrench , drill driver or the like.

There are thread-cutting nuts in metric or imperial versions.

Repair nuts are usually not suitable for cutting a new thread, but only for recutting an existing thread that has not yet been completely destroyed. Repair nuts are often undersized, i.e. they cut a slightly smaller thread from an originally standard thread.

A set of cutting nuts of various sizes is often part of the equipment of military or expedition vehicles for quick repairs on the go.

Repair nuts are also used if a stuck threaded bolt cannot be replaced or if defective original screws from historic vehicles are to be used.
