Weighed

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Gewog ( Dzongkha : རྒེད་ འོག Wylie rged 'og , German "Block") is an administrative unit between Chiwog and Dzongkhag (district) in Bhutan . Each Gewog generally comprises 5 or 6 Chiwogs, which in turn represent a group of villages. Each weigh is governed by a so-called Gup . The 20 districts of Bhutan are divided into 201 Gewogs (as of 2005), with a Gewog having an average area of 191 km².

The Gewogs were set up as part of a program to decentralize the country, which the King of Bhutan Jigme Singye Wangchuck pursued in the 1980s. The Gewogs have been official administrative units since 1991.
