In Blumenthal , the population rose steadily due to the growth of the local companies (including the Bremer Woll-Kämmerei from 1883 and the Bremer Vulkan from 1893). The improvement of the living conditions was urgently needed. Since 1885 Paul Berthold was district administrator in the Prussian district of Blumenthal . He was a promoter of cooperative property. In 1892/93 he created the Association for the Promotion of Housing for Workers in order to take the wind out of the sails of the aspiring socialists. In 1894 he founded the savings and construction association Blumenthal as a cooperative . The association started with 55 shares at 200 marks each.
In 1896, Berthold co-founded the Association of Building Cooperatives in Germany . He became chairman of the association and in 1906 director of the newly founded association of building cooperatives in Lower Saxony .
The members leading the savings and construction association came from the upper class, especially from the management level of the Bremen wool combing department. But some workers were also initially members of the cooperative. The office of the association was in today's Lindenstrasse . Initially, single-family houses were built in Lüssum , which was incorporated into the Blumenthal community in 1907. Despite strong criticism in the beginning, the activities in the association continued and the number of comrades and houses built, mostly with granny apartments, grew. Around 1900 167 houses with 341 apartments had been built and in 1914 there were 340 houses with 860 apartments. Old buildings were also taken over and renovated. Several residential buildings have been built at the Vulkan shipyard since 1896.
The club's development stagnated during the First World War . After the war, the influence of the workers' organizations became strong in the club. In 1933 the association had 537 members. After 1933, the National Socialists and the NSDAP officials took over power in the organization. In 1940 four cooperatives were merged: the building and settlement cooperative Lesum and the surrounding area , the building and settlement cooperative Schönebeck , the Heimstättenbund for Blumenthal and the surrounding area and the savings and building association Blumenthal . The company called Gemeinnützige Wohnungs- und Siedlungsgenossenschaft Bremen-Lesum GmbH (Gewosie) now had 1,470 members and managed 896 apartments.
After the Second World War , the inventory was initially managed and renovated. In 1949, Gewosie began building new residential buildings, particularly in Lesum and Lüssum-Bockhorn . During this time the cooperative also built the necessary access roads . By 1953, 90 residential buildings with 303 rental apartments and 164 owner-occupied houses with 325 apartments were built.
The larger Vorberger Straße housing estate in Lüssum-Bockhorn with 1,383 apartments was built by 1966 . In 1965, the residential high-rise on Bürgermeister-Kürten-Strasse was built. In 1984/85 Gewosie took over the economically endangered Sonnenhof eG . From the mid-1980s, the new building stagnated. In 1995 the Gewosie had 8,400 members and the construction volume amounted to 168 million marks. Maintenance and modernization were now the focus of business practice.

Current
Gewosie, based at Hammersbecker Strasse 173, currently has over 7,100 members. The business credit amounts to over 8 million euros. The company owns over 4000 apartments in various Bremen-North districts with over 235,000 square meters of living space.
In 2012, the balance sheet total was over EUR 149 million. From 2002 to 2012 around 159 million euros were invested in the housing stock.
Gabriele Hoppen and Rainer Detjen are on the board; The chairman of the supervisory board is Rainer Küchen.
At the cooperative, elected bodies control the annual financial statements. You will be supported by the statutory auditing association. The committees decide on the use of the net profit, projects and prospects. If you want to rent an apartment, you have to be a member of the cooperative.
