The gfs.berne (Society for Social Research) is a private institute for applied research in the areas of policy and communication in Switzerland . The company employs fourteen people in research (2018) The surveys are carried out by the GfS survey service.

Company history

The company has existed as an independent stock corporation since January 1st, 2004. Together with gfs.zürich AG, the company has an equal share in the gfs survey service AG, founded in 2001, which provides the demoscopic services of both institutes. Previously, all three companies were united in the GfS Research Institute, which belonged to the Swiss Society for Practical Social Research . This was founded in 1959 to promote social research in Switzerland. It had maintained a secretariat since the 1970s that carried out research projects itself. In 1986 this was legalized as a stock corporation and has since formed the GfS Research Institute. In 1998 it was reorganized and divided into two independent business areas, Zurich and Bern, before they finally became independent as joint stock companies in 2004.

The founder of gfs.bern, Claude Longchamp , sold his company to the employees Urs Bieri and Lukas Golder in 2016. Longchamp will remain Chairman of the Board of Directors until 2019.

Products

The best-known products from the field of politics are the VOX analysis in cooperation with the political science institutes of the universities of Bern, Geneva and Zurich and the election barometer commissioned by SRG SSR as well as the trend studies prior to voting for the same client. In the analysis of direct democracy, the institute director Claude Longchamp has made a name for himself in particular .

In the area of communication, the institute determines the worry barometer and the youth barometer on behalf of Credit Suisse and conducts e-government and e-health research .

criticism

Studies by gfs.bern often receive a lot of media attention and are therefore repeatedly discussed in an adversarial manner. The German-Syrian political scientist and Islamic scholar Bassam Tibi ( Göttingen ) accused the GfS, two years before the publication of the criticized study, of being "instrumentalized" for political and ideological favoritism surveys on behalf of Islamist lobby organizations. The co-head of gfs.bern, Lukas Golder, contradicts the claims in another article
