Ghana Stock Exchange

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) is the stock exchange of Ghana . Today (2006) 28 stocks are listed in their GSE-All-Share-Index . The exchange opened on November 12, 1990.

The heavyweight is the mining company AngloGold-Ashanti Ltd. formed in 1994 through the merger of AngloGold Ltd. and Ashanti Goldfields Ltd. with a market capitalization of about 79.1 trillion cedi , which corresponds to about 7.1 billion euros (July 2006). Ashanti Goldfields Ltd. was the first African company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1996 .

Furthermore, cocoa processing and trading companies, banks, breweries and a tobacco company are listed, so that the index reaches a total market capitalization of around 97.2 trillion Cedi, which corresponds to around 8.7 billion euros (as of July 2006). Since the start of trading, the GSE has been the best young stock market several times , as measured by index development .

For comparison: the German E.ON AG , as the heavyweight, has a market capitalization of € 61.39 billion within the Dax-30, while MAN AG, the smaller DAX stock, has a market capitalization of € 7.67 billion (as of July 19, 2006 )
