Gheriah

Gheriah is the modern name of a sea fortress in southwest India , south of Ratnagiri, in the state of Maharashtra . The old name was Vijaydurg (Hindi "victory fortress"). It was since the late 17th century the seat of the fleet of the Marathas under the Admiral Kanhoji Angre (1667-1729), who waged a pirate war against the colonial sea powers Portugal , Netherlands and Great Britain from there .

The Gheriah , also Gurrah , is also an Indian measure of length. The measure was common in Bengal .
