The Hanau Ghetto Wall is the last remaining original structure of the Jewish Ghetto in the city of Hanau .

location

The wall runs along the south side of the property in the southern section of Nordstrasse , the former Judengasse , in Hanau. The wall delimited the Jewish ghetto across from Hanauer Neustadt. The wall runs along a footpath that connects the Freiheitsplatz with the Main-Kinzig-Halle and is therefore easily accessible.

Building fabric

Foundation block of a powder tower behind the police headquarters.

The function of the wall as a ghetto wall was probably secondary, the original function not clearly clarified. It may be the last renaissance remnant of the fortification of the old town of Hanau . At its eastern end, a foundation block of a powder tower of the city fortifications was placed, which was uncovered during the construction of the neighboring police headquarters. The ghetto wall is one of the few that have survived in Germany. It is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .

Memorial to the victims of National Socialism

The wall is now a memorial. It was inaugurated on May 30, 2010 - by Charlotte Knobloch , among others - for the Jewish citizens who were expelled, deported and murdered from Hanau or persecuted because of Jewish ancestors during National Socialism . The memorial consists of 236 bronze plaques that were mounted on the wall: a summary plaque and a further plaque for each of the murdered with personal information. The city of Hanau has consciously decided against commemorating stumbling blocks .
