Giacomo Cervetto

Giacobo Basevi detto Cervetto , later also called Cervetto the Elder (* around 1682 in Italy ; † January 14, 1783 in London ) was an Italian cellist and composer .

Life

Giacomo or Giacobo Bassevi Cervetto came from a Jewish family based in Verona. After his training he first worked in Italy, in 1728 or 10 years later he went as a musician, such as a dealer for Italian musical instruments to England, where he became a member of the Drury Lane Theater from 1748 at the latest ; according to Fétis, he had this orchestra for a few years directed what has since been refuted. Later he had a permanent position in Handel's opera orchestra .

He mainly created works for one to three cellos and figured bass. Through numerous concerts he made his instrument known in England, where the viol played a dominant role for a long time . The cellist Nochez was one of his students, as was his son James Cervetto (* January 8, 1748 - February 5, 1837), to whom he left a fortune of more than £ 20,000 on his death at the age of 101, he was also a composer and cellist.

The painter Johann Zoffany made an oil portrait of Cervetto and a self-portrait with his daughter, Cervetto and his son.
