Gianluca Tiberti

Gianluca Tiberti (born April 24, 1967 in Rome ) is a former modern pentathlete who became world champion in the individual competition in 1990 and won two Olympic medals.

Tiberti moved to the Italian team at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . In the individual ranking he took 17th place. In the team competition he won the silver medal behind the Hungarian team together with Carlo Massullo and Daniele Masala . Four years earlier, Massullo and Masala had won gold together with Pierpaolo Cristofori , at the 1986 World Cup they had become world champions together with Cesare Toraldo . At the 1990 World Cup in Lahti , Tiberti managed to win the gold medal somewhat surprisingly in front of the Soviet pentathlete Anatoly Starostin . Tiberti was the third Italian after Masala 1982 and Massullo 1986 to win the individual world championship. In the team competition, the Soviet team won ahead of Gianluca Tiberti, Cesare Toraldo and Alessandro Conforto . At his second Olympic participation in Barcelona in 1992 , Tiberti finished 23rd in the individual ranking. In the team standings , he won bronze with Roberto Bomprezzi and Carlo Massullo behind Poland and the United Team .

As a member of the Carabinieri , Tiberti also competed several times in the military world championships in modern pentathlon. In 1987 and 1991 he received the bronze medal in the individual ranking, in 1991 and 1995 he won with the Italian team.
