Carlo Massullo

Carlo Massullo (born August 13, 1957 in Rome ) is a former modern pentathlete who became world champion in individual and team competitions in 1986 and won five Olympic medals.

Life

Massullo won his first world championship medal in 1981 when he reached 21st place in the individual standings, but third place in the team standings behind Poland and Hungary. In 1982 and 1983, the athletes from the Soviet Union won the team competition before the Hungarians. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , the Italians profited from the Olympic boycott of the Eastern Bloc countries. Daniele Masala won the individual competition with 13 points ahead of the Swede Svante Rasmuson , Carlo Massullo received the bronze medal. The Italian team with Masala, Massullo and Pierpaolo Cristofori won gold in front of the teams from the USA and France.

In 1985 at the World Championships in Melbourne , Massullo took fourth place in the individual standings, the team reached third place. In 1986 the World Cup took place in Italy, namely in Montecatini. Carlo Massullo won ahead of Daniele Masala, together they won the title with the team. It was the only world championship title that Italy could ever win in the team championship. In 1987 Massullo took fourth place in the individual ranking.

At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 , Massullo took second place in the individual ranking behind the Hungarian János Martinek , where he showed his best individual performance as so often in the final cross-country run. Together with Masala and Gianluca Tiberti , Massullo also won silver in the team standings behind the Hungarians. In 1989 Massullo reached ninth place in the individual ranking and eighth place with the team at the World Cup. At his third Olympic participation in 1992 in Barcelona , Massullo finished twelfth in the individual ranking. In the team competition he won bronze behind Poland and the United Team together with Roberto Bomprezzi and Gianluca Tiberti.
