János Martinek

János Martinek (born May 23, 1965 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian modern pentathlete who was Olympic champion in the individual and team competitions in 1988.

Martinek was first Hungarian team champion in 1986 with the team from Honvéd Budapest , in 1987 he also won the individual competition. At the 1987 World Cup, he won the team title together with László Fábián and Attila Mizsér , and in the individual standings he came 14th.

At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul he was fifth in riding and in fencing he was only defeated by László Fábián. After Martinek was the sixth fastest runner, in the end he had 5404 points 25 points ahead of the Italian Carlo Massullo . Together with Fábián and Mizsér, he also won the team championship with a clear lead over the Italians.

In 1989 Martinek defended the team world champion title together with Fábián and Mizsér. In 1994 Martinek managed to win another title in the relay competition introduced in 1989. At this world championship Martinek also won his only individual medal at a world championship in third place.

In 1996, for the first time in the modern Olympic history, pentathlon was held in one day, Martinek was able to win the bronze medal thanks to good performance in fencing and riding despite a lower mileage.

In 1998 Martinek won the Hungarian team championship for the seventh and last time. In total, the trained sports teacher has won nine Hungarian championship titles in his career.
