Giannis Alafouzos

Giannis Alafouzos (born July 2, 1957 in Santorini ) ( Greek Γιάννης Αλαφούζος ) is a Greek shipowner and football official .

Life

He owns the Greek daily Kathimerini and the media company Skai Group . He is also president of the Greek football club Panathinaikos Athens . Alafouzos is married and has three children. He received a suspended sentence of several years for tax evasion.

Giannis Alafouzos was born in 1957 as the son of the entrepreneur, ship owner and newspaper publisher Aristeidis Alafouzos. He graduated from the University of Oxford in economics and history . Alafouzos was a track and field athlete during his studies (specialty: 100 m sprint ). He has also received international awards as a sailor.

Shipowner

In the early 80s, after Giannis Alafouzos had finished his studies, he started working as a shipowner and expanded the family shipping company Glafki (Hellas) Maritime Company . He was the managing director of the Kyklades Maritime Corporation , which operates a fleet of tankers . He also founded the shipping company Ermis Maritime Corporation .

In 2015, Alafouzos was fined 160 million US dollars due to a natural disaster. In 1997 one of his ships lost 25,000 barrels of oil off the coast of Maracaibo in Venezuela, causing the largest natural disaster in the South American state.

In summer 2016 it became known that Giannis Alafouzos had evaded 63 million euros in taxes. With this black money he should u. a. Journalists and advertising have paid. As a result, Alafouzos's property was confiscated by the state.

In 2016, Alafouzos and SKAI TV journalist Kyriakos Thomaidis were charged with violating the Privacy Act during the 2015 Greek football scandal. However, they were later acquitted. Giannis Alafouzos has met a lot of opposition in his efforts to expose corruption in Greek football.

Giannis Alafouzos was sentenced to one year in prison in December 2016. The reason for this was the violation of personal rights by a broadcast on his TV station SKAI.
