Giannis Kourakis ( Greek Γιάννης Κουράκης , born October 6, 1955 in Tylissos , Crete ) is a Greek politician and mayor of the Cretan capital Heraklion .

Kourakis studied telecommunications and worked in the National Electricity Supply Company ΔΕΗ and in the Federation of General Greek Workers' Union ( Greek Γενική Συνομοσπονδία Εργάτων Ελλάδας ΓΣΕΕ , GSEE).

From 1990 to 1994 he was a councilor in Heraklion. In the parliamentary elections in 1993, 1996 and 2000, he was elected as a candidate for the social democratic PASOK as a member of the Greek Parliament from Heraklion , where he was a member of the Economic and Social Committee and was mainly involved in social and employment issues.

In 2001, Kourakis was appointed State Secretary for Sport to the Ministry of Culture of the Konstantinos Simitis government and was involved in the preparation of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens .

Since the beginning of 2003 he has been mayor of Heraklion. In October 2006 he was re-elected with 72.76% of the vote and in November 2010 with 71.82% of the vote.

Kourakis is married and has two children.
