Giant's Grave (Islay)
The Giant's Grave ( Scottish Gaelic Slochd Measach ) said chamber grave ( English Chambered Cairn ) is the largest megalithic site on Islay , an island of the Inner Hebrides in Argyll and Bute in Scotland . It is located in a forest near Nereabolls (also Nerabus) on the Rhinns of Islay peninsula .
description
Giant's Grave are the remains of a northeast-southwest-oriented Clyde Tomb , of whose cairn no remains have been preserved, while most of the bearing stones and three stones of the almost straight exedra survived. Two 1.8 and 2.55 m long cap stones have slipped at some point and are in the chamber. The chamber floor, about 45 cm lower than the surrounding moorland, is usually covered by water. The chamber is around 7.8 m long and is somewhat irregular in plan due to the shifting of several stones. The walls made of large slabs are between 0.9 and 1.4 m high. The chamber is divided by panels supported by posts.
