Giant drag

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giant Drag is an alternative rock project by the American singer, composer and guitarist Annie Hardy . From 2003 to 2006 the keyboardist Micah Calabrese was also involved in the project.

history

Giant Drag was created as a duo in 2003. The mastermind behind the band is the songwriter Annie Hardie, who previously worked as a DJ in Los Angeles , where she has lived since 1998. It originally comes from San Clemente (California) , a medium-sized city not far from the Mexican border. The stage show managed the formation at the time without additional musicians, as Annie Hardy sang and played guitar and Micah Calabrese replaced the synthesizer bass and drums. In 2004, the drummer Eli Smith was involved in Giant Drag as an interim replacement for Calabrese, but he left the formation in 2004.

The project quickly became known in the American alternative scene and appeared on tours in the opening act for The Jesus and Mary Chain and The Lemonheads . In 2005 the EP Lemona was released in the USA , and in 2006 the album Hearts and Unicorns (Kickball Records) was also released internationally . Annie Hardy was then involved in the Deftones song "Pink Cellphone" as a singer. The collaboration between Hardy and Calabrese ended in the year the album was released. The singer and songwriter then continued the project alone.

Songs from Giant Drag appeared in several US series: Jericho - The attack , Nip / Tuck - Beauty has its price (here the project was involved with a cover version of Wicked Game by Chris Isaak , with which the series was advertised on American television ), The L Word - When women love women . The song This isn´t it was part of the soundtrack of the Hollywood film Lovesong for Bobby Long .

music

The sound of Giant Drag is called "Nu Grunge " and compared to artists like The Breeders or PJ Harvey . The lyrics and the artwork are often full of black humor and rough language (such as the song YFLMD , which means something like You fuck like my dad ). Annie Hardy can be seen on the cover of the debut with a knife in hand, in a pose that satirically alludes to a previous bloody act.
