The Gieselau Canal with a length of 2.8 kilometers connects the Lower Eider and Kiel Canal . It can be navigated by ships up to 65 meters in length, 9 meters in width and 2.70 m in draft; today it is primarily used by sport boats.

history

In Rendsburg there was a connection between the Kiel Canal (NOK) and the Untereider until 1937: When the NOK was built, a new lock was built in 1893 , which replaced the former entrance lock of the Eider Canal from 1784. However, because the lock system in the old town of Rendsburg hindered inner-city traffic, a more favorable connection between the ports of the Lower Elbe and the Untereider was planned. A canal in the Gieselau valley should connect the Kiel Canal near Oldenbüttel (approx. 20 km as the crow flies southwest of the old town) and the Eider south of Prinzenmoor .

The Gieselau Canal was built from 1936 to 1937; but it does not use the bed of the Gieselau stream, which is separated by the Kiel Canal . The canal only crosses the old ditch twice and apart from its name has nothing in common with the Gieselau stream. The Rendsburg lock was then filled in. The different water levels between the NOK and the Eider can be balanced through a 65 m long and 9 m wide lock, which is located roughly in the middle of the Gieselau Canal.

Federal waterway

The Gieselau Canal (GiK) is a federal waterway in the area of responsibility of the Brunsbüttel Waterways and Shipping Office . The federal waterway begins at km 0.088 at the junction from the Kiel Canal (at NOK km 40.66 54 ° 10 ′ 25.6 ″  N , 9 ° 26 ′ 34.8 ″  E ) and ends at km 2.897 at the confluence with the Eider (at Eider km 22.75 54 ° 11 ′ 51.1 ″  N , 9 ° 26 ′ 29.2 ″  E ). The shipping routes regulations apply to it .
