The Gieselau is a brook in the middle of western Schleswig-Holstein, in eastern Dithmarschen . It is first mentioned in a document in 1531 as "Gieselowe".
The Gieselau has several source streams. Two of its source streams are called Westerau and Bellerbek, both of which have their origins north of Albersdorf . Sources in the municipality of Schrum and Welmbüttel are found in the source stream, which Neocorus named Kellihorn-Scheide-Beek as early as 1600. This brook was at the same time between Welmbüttel and Schrum the border of the two Dithmarschen (Neocorus vol. II page 267). This stream is later called Schrum-Brooks-Beke and further south becomes Westerau and finally Gieselau.
The stream is crossed south of Albersdorf on state road 316 (Gieselau valley). Due to the construction of the Kiel Canal , its natural inlet to the Eider south of Lexfähre was cut off. Only with the construction of the Gieselau Canal will the "old connection" next to the original bed of the Gieselau be restored.
Among other things, it is spawning water for sea trout . The Gieselau Valley in the hilly Geest landscape , the so-called Dithmarscher Switzerland , has been renatured in the last few decades and is now a nature reserve. It will later become a fauna and flora habitat . The valley is part of the site of the Archaeological-Ecological Center in Albersdorf.
The Gieselau is not to be confused with the Gieselau Canal , which is the connection between the Eider and the Kiel Canal and is also known for the Gieselau lock .
