Gilbert, Earl of Caithness

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gilbert, Earl of Caithness and Jarl of Orkney († 1256 ) was a Norwegian - Scottish nobleman.

Legacy of Caithness and Orkney

After the death of Magnus (II), Earl of Caithness and Jarl of Orkney in 1239, his successor was unclear. Magnus had no male offspring. Since Orkney was under the sovereignty of the Norwegian kings, a different inheritance law applied there than in Caithness, which was under the sovereignty of the Scottish kings. One possible heir to Magnus would have been Joanna , who was likely part of the family of the Scottish Earl of Angus . Since she had only two daughters and no sons from her marriage to Freskin de Moravia , a nephew of the Earl of Sutherland , she would probably not have been recognized as the heiress of Orkney by the Norwegian king. Therefore, she likely inherited only part of Caithness, and her husband was never dubbed the Earl of Caithness. Instead, at an unknown date, Gilbert became the new Earl of Caithness and Earl or Jarl of Orkney. His exact origins are unknown, but he was certainly also from the family of the Earl of Angus, perhaps the Ogilvy branch of the family. Almost nothing is known about his life and activities in Caithness and Orkney.

progeny

Almost nothing is known about Gilbert's life. His heir was Magnus Gilbertson , who was probably his son. He also probably had at least one daughter, Matilda , who married Malise, 5th Earl of Strathearn .
