Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor (born October 28, 1875 in Istanbul , Turkey , † February 4, 1966 ) was editor-in-chief of National Geographic for 55 years and was instrumental in establishing photojournalism .

Life

Grosvenor was born the son of the orientalist and professor of history at Amherst College Edwin A. Grosvenor and the Lilian Waters Grosvenor in Istanbul in 1875.

Services

Grosvenor is considered one of the founders of photojournalism and has been editor-in-chief of National Geographic for 55 years . He took over the patronage of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition (1929-1931), the leader of which Richard Evelyn Byrd named the Grosvenor Mountains in the Transantarctic after him in thanks .
