Gilbert Lazard (born February 4, 1920 in Paris ; † September 6, 2018 there ) was a French linguist and Iranist . His work includes the study of various Persian poetry, translations on linguistic typology, in particular on morphosyntactic alignment. He also mastered the Tahitian language.

Live and act

Gilbert Lazard studied at the École normal supérieure, graduated in 1946 (grammar aggregation) and 1948 (Persian language diploma from the National School for Modern Oriental Languages, now the National Institute for Oriental Languages ​​and Cultures - INALCO). From 1958 to 1966 he was professor of Persian at INALCO.

From 1951 to 1969 he led Iranian culture courses at the Sorbonne , where he became a lecturer in 1960 and professor for Iranian language and culture in 1966. From 1969 to 1981 he taught at the University of Paris III: Sorbonne Nouvelle, where he was Director of the Department of Orientalism from 1969 to 1974 and Director of the Institute of Iranian Studies from 1972 to 1987.

From 1972 to 1990 he worked at the École pratique des hautes études as director of studies for linguistics and Iranian philology. From 1972 to 1983 he headed the Iranian Language, Literature and Culture research team affiliated with the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the University of Paris III: New Sorbonne. From 1984 to 1993 he was responsible for the CNRS research group "Interlinguistic Research on the Variations of Actance and Their Correlates" (Interlinguistic for Actancy Variations and Their Correlates). On November 14, 1980 he was elected a full member of the Academy for Inscriptions and Fiction.

He has become a member of numerous scholarly societies, including the Association for the Advancement of Iranian Studies, the Society of Linguistics in Paris, the Asian Society, and the Association for Linguistic Typology.
