Gilbert Norman Plass (born March 22, 1920 in Toronto , Ontario , † March 2, 2004 ) was a Canadian physicist who lived most of his life in the United States . He graduated from Harvard University in 1941 and received his PhD in physics from Princeton University in 1947 . He later became a professor at Texas A&M University . Since 1956 he has been concerned with the effects of carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas . At that time he calculated that doubling the CO 2 concentration ( climate sensitivity ) would lead to a warming of 3.6 ° C. Today we assume values between 2 and 4.5 ° C.
