Gilbert de Clare, 1st Earl of Hertford

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gilbert de Clare, 1st Earl of Hertford († 1152 ) was an Anglo-Norman nobleman from the de Clare family .

He was the eldest son of Richard FitzGilbert de Clare and his wife Adeliza, daughter of Ranulph le Meschin, 1st Earl of Chester . After his father's assassination in 1136, he inherited his southern English possessions of Clare and Tonbridge , while the Welsh possessions were lost to the Welsh victory at the Battle of Crug Mawr . He was named Earl of Hertford under King Stephen around 1138 . In the succession dispute between Stephan and his rival Matilda , the Anarchy , he initially stood on the side of the king and fought in the battles of Lincoln and Winchester . In 1146 he turned himself hostage to the king for his uncle Ranulph de Gernon, 2nd Earl of Chester . But when Ranulph switched sides again, the king forced him to hand over his castles to him. When Gilbert was released, he also sided with Stephen's opponents.

From his marriage to Lucy, whose origin is unknown, he had at least one daughter, Margaret, who married William de Montfichet († before 1156). Since Gilbert died without male heirs, his lands fell to his younger brother Roger . His widow Lucy was second married to Baldwin de Redvers, 1st Earl of Devon .
