Gilbert de Umfraville (nobleman, † 1175)
Gilbert de Umfraville († 1175 ) was an Anglo-Scottish nobleman.
Gilbert de Umfraville came from the Anglo-Scottish noble family Umfraville . He was probably a younger son of Robert I de Umfraville . While his older brother Odinel de Umfraville was also active in Scotland , but mainly in northern England, Gilbert spent his life mainly in Scotland. Around 1140 he served as a constable for Henry of Scotland , the eldest surviving son of King David I. After Henry's death in 1152, he continued to serve his younger son Wilhelm as a constable. Umfraville attested numerous documents for Heinrich, Wilhelm and Heinrich's eldest son, King Malcolm IV . In 1159 he accompanied Malcolm when he traveled to France as king. He also witnessed three documents in Northumberland , two of them together with his older brother Odinel. After his death around 1166 he inherited his northern English rule Prudhoe , but he lived mainly on his Scottish estates. His heir became his son Odinel II de Umfraville , who, however, fought on the English side during the Scottish invasion of northern England in 1173. As a result, Gilbert's castles in Northumberland were attacked by the Scots.
