The Gilchrist Beach is a 1.5 km long gravel beach on the north side of the island Heard in the southern Indian Ocean . It extends west of the Compton Glacier .
The beach had been known as Rocky Beach and Stoney Beach among US seal hunters since at least 1860 . The name we use today goes back to participants in a campaign as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions , which surveyed Heard Island in 1948. It is named after Alan R. Gilchrist, the doctor on this research trip.
