Giles Chichester (born July 29, 1946 in London ) is a British politician ( Conservative Party ) and member of the European Parliament .

Chichester studied geography at Oxford University from 1965 to 1968 . Since 1969 he worked in a company founded by his father, Sir Francis Chichester , and named after him, which publishes maps and travel guides. Giles Chichester was Managing Director from 1983 and Chairman of the Company from 1989. In addition, he held managerial positions in various other companies, especially in the publishing sector. Chichester is a member of the Royal Geographical Society .

From 1984 to 1987 Chichester was chairman of the Hammersmith Conservative Association, from 1988 to 1990 and 1997 to 1998 he was a board member of the National Union of British Conservatives, and he was also chairman of the Carlton Club's political committee . In the European elections in 1994 he was elected to the European Parliament for the first time , where he was initially a member of the EPP-ED Group . From 2004 to 2007 he was Chairman of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy in the European Parliament, and since 2004 he has also been President of the European Energy Forum .

Until June 5, 2008, Chichester was also head of the British Conservative delegation in the European Parliament. However, he had to resign after it became known that he had been transferring funds from the secretarial allowance for MEPs to his own company since 1996 . Chichester argued that these funds were directed to his political staff and were cleared through the private company only to simplify his administration. The European Parliament approved this practice in 1999 and 2004. In contrast, the parliamentary administration saw this as a violation of the parliamentary financial regulation adopted in 2003. After an in-depth investigation, the Secretary General of the European Parliament, Klaus Welle , withdrew the allegations because the money had actually only been used for political purposes and not for personal gain.

In the European elections in the UK in 2009 , Chichester was re-elected. Like the other British Conservatives, he joined then made from the EPP-ED Group to the newly formed group European Conservatives and Reformists join (ECR). Chichester is a member of the Industry, Research and Energy Committee . On July 5, 2011, he was elected one of the 14 Vice-Presidents of Parliament after Silvana Koch-Mehrin stepped down from this office.
