Gill (body of water)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gill or Ghyll is used to denote a river and also a narrow valley in northern England. The word comes from the Old Norse language . When the word designates a narrow valley, the river in this valley is usually referred to as the Beck and this word is in turn associated with the North Humbrian Burn . The Gunnerside Beck flows through the Gunnerside Gill valley . In variations such as Bäke, Beke, Beek, Beeke as a Middle Low German term for “Bach”, the word Beck is also represented in the German language. See Bek .
