Gilles Aycelin de Montaigut

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gilles I. Aycelin († June 23, 1318 ), known as de Montaigut , was Archbishop of Narbonne and Rouen and one of the most important advisers to King Philip IV.

Gilles Aycelin was the son of Pierre Aycelin , a lawyer from the area of Count Alfons of Poitiers , possibly related to Pierre Flote , and himself a doctor of civil law. He was already in the service of Philip when he negotiated the approval of the tithe (Décime) with the Pope in 1288 . In 1290 he was made Archbishop of Narbonne and in 1311 Archbishop of Rouen .

Gilles Aycelin was Philip's advisor throughout his reign. He negotiated the Franco-English Treaty of Tournai (1298) and the Treaty of Montreuil (1299). Along with Chancellor Pierre Flote, he was one of the most important actors in the conflict with the Pope. In the trial against Bernard Saisset , he tried to reconcile the positions of the pope and the king, but then resolutely represented the king's cause (1301–1303).

He headed French diplomacy in Flanders and then with Pope Clement V and was seal keeper from 1309 to 1313 and thus de facto Chancellor of France . In the same year 1309 he was one of the commissioners who administered the confiscated property of the Knights Templar .

As the only archbishop among Philip's lawyers, and also a diplomat, Gilles Aycelin sought to find the balance for a French church that was subject to two masters. He defended the rights of the king vis-à-vis the pope just as uncompromisingly as his rights as archbishop vis-à-vis the king’s officials. His intellectual independence and his moral straightforwardness led to the fact that in 1315 under Louis X, he refused to take part in the trial of his former colleague Pierre de Latilly .

Gilles I. Aycelin de Montaigut founded the Collège de Montaigu in Paris in 1314.
