Gillig Corporation is an American bus manufacturer based in Hayward , California. With an annual production of 1200 to 1300 buses, Gillig is the second largest bus manufacturer in North America after New Flyer .
The company was founded in 1890 by Jacob Gillig as a dealer for carriages and covered wagons . In 1932, his sons Leo and Chester Gillig built their first school bus and in the following years specialized in building school buses.
Modified Neoplan city buses were manufactured under license from 1977 to 1979 . With the Phantom , Gillig launched his first own city bus in 1980 , which was produced until 2008 and is the company's most successful model to date.
