Giorgi Melikishvili

Giorgi Melikishvili ( Georgian გიორგი მელიქიშვილი ; Russian Гео́ргий Алекса́ндрович Меликишви́ли ; English Giorgi Melikishvili ; * December 30, 1918; † March 27, 2002) was a Georgian historian. He did basic work on the history of Georgia, the Caucasus and the Middle East . He earned international recognition for his research on Urartu .

Life

Melikishvili was born in Tbilisi and graduated from Tbilisi State University in 1939 . In 1956 he was appointed professor there, after having worked as a lecturer in the Department of Ancient History at the Institute for the History of Georgia since 1954. He stayed in this position until 1988. In addition, he was director of the institute from 1965 to 1999 and remained honorary director until his death. He was the first Soviet historian to receive the Lenin Prize .

Focus

He worked on the connections of ancient Georgia with the Anatolian and Mesopotamian cultures and made fundamental contributions to the exploration of Urartu. His book К истории древней Грузии On the History of Ancient Georgia (Russian, 1959) is a standard work on ancient Georgia to this day. Some of Melikishvili's most important essays were published in the collection Research on the Ancient History of Georgia, Caucasus and the Middle East (ძიებანი საქართველოს, კავკასიისა და ახლო აღმოსავლეთის ძველი ისტორიის დარგში, Georgian) in the early 2000s.

Melikishvili had been a member of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences since 1960 .
