Giorgio Gentili

Giorgio Gentili (* around 1669 in Venice ; † after 1731 there) was an Italian composer and violinist of the Baroque.

Life

On July 10, 1689 Gentili got a job as a violinist in the ducal chapel at San Marco , where he worked as a soloist from 1693. He held this position at least until 1731, in that year he was co-signatory of a document in which Antonio Lotti's authorship of the madrigal "una siepe ombrosa" was questioned. The few remaining written references to Gentili confirm a permanent activity at San Marco. Between 1702 and 1717, "Maestro di istromenti" was also at the Ospedale dei Mendicanti .

Works

Gentili left six collections of published instrumental music, with a total of 72 individual works. Stylistically, the sonatas are comparable to those of his Venetian fellow citizen Tomaso Albinoni , but Gentili's works are technically more demanding. In his Concerti a cinque, as in Albinoni's works, one can recognize the use of the tenor viola , a characteristic of the Venetian school.
