Giorgio Griffa

Giorgio Griffa (born March 29, 1936 in Turin ) is an Italian painter .

Life

Giorgio Griffa's abstract art developed from Informel in the 1960s . He was also influenced by Pop Art and Concept Art . At that time he became one of the leading exponents of modern Italian painting and is also assigned to the Arte Povera . According to his understanding, painting happens in the interaction between the painter and the work that demands to be painted. Griffa's work is characterized by restraint in colors and shapes. According to his gallery owners, Griffa's works can be read “as fragments that structure the space of the canvas, but also - like music - time.” Some of his works resemble scores .

He prefers unprimed linen as a painting surface , and he refrains from framing his pictures.
